Letters all a jumble, all over my desk.
I thought this visually represented the start of this project.
At the start the idea was very 'loose' and could be easily confused with all the 6 main aspects.
Lots of ideas going off in every way.
Which Is why I still plan to do my 'exploding 3D mind map', a mind map of all the ideas. I imagine this to hang at the 'front' of my space (I will curate it so people move through the space), representing when you first get an idea, every idea seems to have potential but not make much sense, the most exciting part.
The A3 map will be made 3D by hanging the A1 laser cut frame about 10cm in front with invisible thread, so the light can come through the negative cut letters (I hope the light will create shadows of letters, making everything more confusing and seeming more intense-just like the start of a design project!!)
Now I have the positive letters as well I will sew them together in no order with invisible thread and hang them randomly around the front of my space (around mind map) creating a 'curtain' of jumbled letters. I hope this will cause confusion as well as mark my space and create interest and impact. The letters will gradually make sense the further through the space you go(I have not decided what they will say, but probably a sentence that summarises the project for me).
This visual display links to the theory, in that, people will want to read these laser cut letters, as they look interesting (people have already been asking me 'but what does it say?!). When I get my second lot printed (for another part) which will make sense, I know (from my primary research) people will not ask as they know that it did't the previous time. This is what I will show in the exhibition. In general people do not read instructions this is either because they think they have read them before (like I am showing) or they don't want to waste the time or just have a go themselves. My idea and possible products solve these 'issues' as there integrated in the products I make, you can not avoid the instructions I have made them the 'pattern' as such.
Forcing them to read the instructions, limits the viewers imagination and therefore I am also 'instructing' them what to think of my work. I got this idea from 'blurbs' in a gallery, once you have read the artists information about a piece it obstructs what you can think about it, even if it is subconsciously.
Instructions, letters (typography), the mechanism openings and black and white are my constants in this project. Materials, curating my space and ideas are what I keep manipulating.
